Value Store It Self-Storage is hosting a month-long donation program with the end goal of giving back to the community through an online storage auction. They are donating storage units as collection points for donated items from the community. Once the storage units are full of donated items, they will be auctioned off with the proceeds being donated to a community charity.
“It’s a nice way to give back,” General Manager Eric Green said. “I have units that are vacant here, so it’s a nice way to use those units and give back to some organizations that can make really good use of the funding. I thought with the month of November, with the giving theme, that this would be a great time to try it out.”
The event is part of Charity Storage’s campaign. The organization was founded to raise funds for causes within the community by utilizing the storage industry. As its website states, storage facilities have unused space, and donors have items they no longer need. By bridging the two together, Charity Storage is able to convert both utilities into cash for charities.
To date, Charity Storage has raised over $740,000.
Green is asking for donations of gently used or new items to be brought to Value Store It, located at 3 Chestnut Street in Worcester, to be placed in storage units that will be auctioned off. Items may include clothing, shoes, tools, sports equipment, and more. Green, however, asks for people to not donate mattresses or food.
Once a unit is filled, Green will post it to an online auction at storagetreasures.com. While the program continues throughout the month of November, Green will auction off each unit as soon as it is full.
Bidders will receive full access to the items within the storage, including the option to keep the items themselves or donate them back into the community.
“Typically, people that are bidding for these units when they’re not for charity, they’re reselling the items,” Green said. “It would be great if they want to make a donation of the goods on top of their monetary donation.”
The proceeds from the sale of each auction will be donated to local and national charities. Bidders will know that the specific units are for charity.
Green chose Ron Burton Training Village, located in Hubbardston, as the local organization the efforts will support. The Ron Burton Training Village Program is a space for kids to train and grow spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Currently, Green is filling two units, but he is hoping to have more filled soon.
Green’s son has been part of the Ron Burton Training Village Program for the past five years, according to Green, so he wanted to give back and created an additional drive in Hopkinton to supply goods to more units.
“He’s spearheading that part of it,” Green said. “U-Haul has donated a few of their trucks, so we’re going to try to fill up trucks in Hopkinton the Saturday after Thanksgiving.”
Green said that Value Store It also can offer a charitable donation receipt for anyone who provides items to the storage units.
Donations can be dropped off at Value Store It, Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
