Small Roster Means Huge Learning Experience for the Young Leicester High School Golf Team

LEICESTER – There’s a youth movement happening for the Leicester High School varsity golf team this fall.

“Currently I have a very young and small lineup,” said head coach Jason Grimshaw. So far, the roster has six players total, five of which are sophomores and freshmen. As a result, Grimshaw has tempered his expectations for the upcoming season.

“Overall, expectations are to establish a solid core of players to take the team forward over the next few years. I am hopeful that I will be able to get some eighth graders on the team as well.”

Senior standout Mason Merrell is returning this fall. Grimshaw said the fourth-year varsity golfer will serve as the Wolverines’ captain. “(He has an) exceptional mind for the game, as well as ability. He is also someone the younger players, the rest of the team really, can look to for examples of sportsmanship, dedication to the game, and leadership.”

Filling out the rest of the roster are sophomores Caden Birtz and Michael Connly and freshmen Sean Alves, James Colonies-Kelley, and Patrick Colonies-Kelley. Due to the small size of the roster at this point, Grimshaw said all the team members will be heavily involved during matches as starters. “This will be a good experience for them as they hopefully (will) continue with golf over the next few years,” he said. “Hopefully I will be adding a few names over the next week or so.”

Grimshaw will be making his return as head coach after missing last year due to an injury. With the exception of last year, he has coached golf at Leicester High since 2004. Grimshaw will be assisted by former Leicester High School golf star, Sean McCarthy, who played for the Wolverines from 2013 to 2016. He is a former co-captain of the Leicester squad and was recognized as a South Worcester County League all-star. “I am excited by the prospect of Sean returning to help out with the team,” Grimshaw said.
