The YMCA of Central Massachusetts is hosting two events for its twelfth year now to benefit cancer survivors in Worcester County.
On October 23, each of the six branches of the YMCA of Central Massachusetts will host Mission in Motion, a four-hour cycle-a-thon. Participants of the Central Massachusetts community branch include Congressman Jim McGovern, Mayor Joe Petty, and District Attorney Joe Early.
“It’s a way of bringing people together,” said David Connell, the president and CEO of the YMCA of Central Massachusetts. “They see the need.”

On October 26, the YMCA will hold its annual Livstrong at the Y: Celebrating Survivorship at the Boroughs Family. The event will take place at the Boroughs Family Branch in Westborough from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and will feature Dr. Bradley Switzer, chief of hematology and oncology at Reliant Medical Group.
The event is in support of the YMCA’s physical and well-being program, which was triggered by the Lance Armstrong Foundation, meant to help adult cancer survivors achieve their health goals.
“We teamed up to really think about cancer survivors achieving their health goals in the most difficult times of their lives,” Connell said. “We thought it was important for an organization like the YMCA that focuses on development health and social responsibility that this was an area that we could really help, to cater to the cancer survivor and family.”
Through an evidence-based, 12-week program, people who have been affected by cancer are able to participate in a safe and supportive environment free of cost through physical and social activities that are focused on strengthening them as a whole person.
“Like any large population, there’s always a large number of people impacted by cancer, whether or not they chose to disclose,” Connell said. “We’ve had our member’s doctor’s refer to our program as part of their recovery. There’s a strong need in our community.”
Participants work with Y staff who are trained in supportive cancer care. They strive for goals, including building muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance, and improving confidence and self-esteem.
In addition, Livestrong also focuses on emotional well-being. Survivors and family members are able to be part of a supportive community and connect during treatment and beyond.

These two events are the main fundraising aspect for support for the Livestrong program. The goal is to raise $150,000, according to Connell.
The public is welcome to attend and show their support on both days.
“We believe that whatever support we can get…can aid this particular program,” Connell said. “100% goes directly to the Livestrong program and affects cancer survivors’ lives.”
