Megan Ouellette kind of fell into jewelry making, she said. She wanted something to do after leaving college, and jewelry making seemed to fit. The journey allowed her to find a new avenue to take care of her mental health. \
“It’s really therapeutic,” Ouellette said. “Making jewelry is fun and keeps my hands busy doing something I enjoy.”
In October of 2019, Meg’s Mystics was founded. She started with earrings. Her collection ranges from studs of just the stones to dangling earrings that have different shapes and elements, like a moon or healer hands.
“Originally it was my thing and what I would like,” Ouellette said. “Now it’s branched out to making things other people would like and to cater to all different types of people, not just people that like crystals.”
After earrings, Ouellette got into crystals. Ouellette’s journey through reflection and self awareness has brought her to learn more about energy and crystal healing as well as herbal medicine, meditation, and divination.
“It’s a very good way for me to spread my energy, or positive vibes,” Ouellette said, “in a way that’s not so like down your throat.”
Everything Ouellette uses is ethically sourced. Each stone has its own vibrational frequency as well as a unique meaning, Ouellette said. Currently, Ouellette has a few different types of calcite hearts on her website, megsmystics.com.
Ouellette said that many of her customers now do not have their own experience with crystal healing prior to buying her products. Some have come back to Ouellette to tell her that while they may not understand the concept, the gems are doing something for them.
“They don’t necessarily recognize that it’s going to help them, and that’s fine,” Ouellette said. “People that don’t have crystals don’t realize the power that they have.”
With social media and TikTok, Ouellette said that more people are getting into crystals because they see videos about it. These people have as Ouellette for specific stones, but she said that they should start small rather than diving in with something powerful.
“Even myself, I started out just because they look cool,” Ouellette said. “And then of course, you realize this can help me with this or I was drawn to this crystal because of this.”
Ouellette said that she tries to educate people about the crystals. She has been spiritual and had crystals of her own for about five or six years. Ouellette got into crystals through her therapy techniques. Her therapist suggested that Ouellette incorporate spirituality into her practice. Going beyond the traditional therapy strategies, Ouellette said, was what helped her the most.
“That really helped me,” Ouellette said. “It helped me realize that there’s more to life than just the outside and that there’s a lot within yourself you can control that you might not recognize.”
Ouellette called it almost a “rabbit hole.” She has now continued with the crystals saying she has “so many it’s a problem” in her collection, and she even always carries one with her at all times. She tries as much as possible to intuitively choose a crystal each day and bring it with her throughout the day.
“Even if you don’t believe in it, it’s good energy that everyone needs,” Ouellette said.
Now, Ouellette has been focusing more on intricate wire wrapping skills.
“It’s always a learning curve,” Ouellette said. “Honestly, it depends on the purpose. Older women tend to go for the earrings for the look and sometimes the rings. Younger, 20-year-olds, who are in the age group where crystals are becoming more popular, go more for the rings and crystal wraps.”
Ouellette’s rings come in different shapes, sizes, and colors. The write rapping around the crystals add an intricate detail that circles around the gems as well as makes a design around the band.
The wire wrapped necklace pendants can be more intricate, and Ouellette said that it’s the product she enjoys making the most right now. The wire criss-crosses around quartzes or kyanite and other stones. The wire cradles the stones to allow the crystals to hang elegantly on clients’ necks.
