Ever since Sutton beat Bromfield in the mud and rain of the Central Mass high school girls’ soccer championship last month, 4-2, both teams seemed destined to meet again in the MIAA Division 5 tournament. The rematch will become a reality in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 3 p.m. after Sutton (4) shutout Oxford (29), 4-0, and Georgetown (13), 3-0, and Bromfield (5) blanked Holbrook (28) and David Prouty (12), 5-0 each time.

Scoring and defense has been the name of the game for both teams’ dominant play thus far in the tournament. Each team also has a player scoring a hat-trick in a game, Ava Magnuson had three goals against Oxford for the Suzies, while Katie Iacomini netted three scores against Holbrook.

Both players created numerous offensive opportunities for their teams, but in different ways. Magnuson is small and fast and is dangerous in the open field, while Iacomini is a tough, physical player who uses her strength and quickness to create scoring chances.

They are also opposites in age, as Magnuson is one of the youngest players on Sutton. She is an eighth grader, who was added to the team on an eighth-grade waiver when Sutton had some early season injuries. “I mean that kid is good,” Sutton coach Jensen Shipp has said about his young scoring threat. “She’s a very good player. You know she’s fast. She’s getting the ball and getting great opportunities. She may be small, but her size doesn’t matter. She’s a great player on and off the ball.”

While Magnuson is young, Iacomini is a senior captain and a leader for the Trojans. “Katie Iacomini is constantly working on bettering herself each and every day,” Bromfield coach Katie Greene said after the Holbrook game. “We have been talking together about her taking the ball to goal more and taking more and more shots each game. She has been creating more opportunities for herself to become a threat. She also is a great passer. She sees the field very well … Katie is so hungry to score and she knows playoffs are full of pressure situations and she rises to the occasion. She doesn’t want this season to end unless it’s at the end of the state finals game with a W.”

Magnuson and Iacomini are only two of the many talented players on these teams. Sutton enters the quarterfinals with a 15-4-1 record, while Bromfield brings a record of 13-3-3. Both teams have yet to let in a goal in the tournament and have outscored their opponents a combined 17-0. Something has to give between these two soccer powerhouses on Saturday. If the exciting game between these two teams last month is any indication of the thrilling brand of soccer to come, the rematch could be the game of the tournament, let alone the weekend.
