BOSTON and LANCASTER, Mass. — Soul singer Such sang pieces of her repertoire, as well as her latest hit, “All I Want,” to a packed room at City Winery Boston on Saturday.
Such’s performance was the second time the singer-songwriter played at City Winery Boston. Such, who is known for her exquisite and hauntingly beautiful voice, performed at the venue in 2019 when her latest album “Wide Nose Full Lips” was released.
“All I Want,” which was the first track on the album and her latest single, hit no. 28 on the Billboard R&B Charts on July 20. Such said that she recently released “All I Want” as a single because she wanted to get more out of the album, which was stalled by the pandemic.
“I feel like ‘Wide Nose Full Lips’ was picking up steam right as the pandemic hit, which was really unfortunate,” she explained. “But I feel like timing always works out, so maybe ‘All I Want’ was supposed to come out right now.”
Such said she named her second album “Wide Nose Full Lips” as a way to reclaim her love for herself and her Blackness.
“When I was a little girl, I had a family member that told me that my nose was too wide,” she said. “And that I needed to pinch it to make it more Eurocentric, which would make me more beautiful. Even though it’s not something I have thought about for a long time, it is definitely something that I internalized. So, the album, I believe, is a love letter to myself and a love letter to Blackness in general.”
A native of Central Massachusetts, Such grew up singing gospel music in the churches of the small Haitian, Seventh-Day Adventist community in South Lancaster, Massachusetts.
After graduating from Nashoba Regional High School, Such moved to Denver, Colorado, where she became a nurse. Then, nine years ago, Such tried out for American Idol and made it onto the show. After that, she released her first album, “Trial and Error,” in 2014, touring extensively in the U.S. and Europe, opening up for Chaka Khan and performing with Robert Glasper, among others.
Such says he has more music in the works, but it’s final form is unknown.
“I am always working on new music, but what is it going to look like? I have no idea,” she said.
Such says that the pandemic and her own recent life experiences have given her artistic inspiration.
“The last 18 months have definitely given me a lot to write about, lots of inspiration, as I pull from living life,” she said. “That’s one of the things about being an artist, you have to live to be able to say something, and I feel like I have done a lot of living in the past year and a half.”
