WORCESTER — Cornerstone Bank has donated $2,500 to the Literary Volunteers of Greater Worcester, a nonprofit organization that provides English literacy tutoring.

Founded 48 years ago, the Literary Volunteers of Greater Worcester is an affiliate of the Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts, a non-profit organization. The league provides one-on-one and small group English lessons largely to those who speak English as a second language, among them, immigrants and refugees.

“In the greater Worcester area, 34% of households speak a language other than English at home. Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester are doing amazing things by providing free ESOL education to adults within our community,” Cornerstone Bank’s CEO Todd Tallman said in a statement. Later adding, “We are proud that members of our team volunteer their time for this organization and we support their goals any way we can.”

According to a release from Cornerstone Bank, the league’s volunteers and specialized English as a second language teachers helped 482 literacy and tutoring students learn to read, write and speak the English language in the last year. The students were all refugees from disparate backgrounds; originating from 52 different countries and speaking 38 different languages.

“The free, flexible, and individualized support students get leads them in the right direction to achieve goals beyond English language proficiency including citizenship, employment, and further education,” said Tallman. “We look forward to seeing Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester continue to create opportunities for people looking to succeed on our community.”
