WORCESTER, Mass. — If you have been to a WooSox game recently, you may have noticed a decorative wooden goat sitting along the WooSox Foundation’s table at Polar Park.
“We have the GOAT Sweepstakes happening right now,” said Michaela Campbell, an intern at the WooSox Foundation who explains the sweepstakes to passers-by. “This is a life-sized goat created by an organization in Florida called ‘Project GOAT.’ They are using art as an avenue to raise awareness on human trafficking.”
Project GOAT (Global Offensive Against Trafficking) is a charitable program of the A+C Foundation, a community foundation of athletes, artists and the causes they care about. Peace Love Goat Ambassadors include Houston Astros Pitcher and World Series Champion Lance McCullers, Jr., Tampa Bay Buccaneers Receiver Chris Godwin, Hollywood actress Kristen Renton, world-renowned architect Yann Weymouth, professional soccer player Seth Jahn, Indianapolis Colts Defensive Lineman Eli Ankou, professional cyclist Shayna Powless, World Series Champion Johnny Damon — and now, legendary Red Sox slugger David Ortiz.
The WooSox Foundation is holding a summer-long sweepstakes to auction off the goat to one lucky winner. The goat, which is painted wearing an old-school baseball uniform, has a picture of Ortiz hitting a homer on its abdomen — and his autograph.
Why goats? It’s a fair question. One of the most versatile of all domestic animals, goats have been used for more than 10,000 years for food, fiber and land management. Their small environmental footprint makes them a great resource for many families across the world, and in particular, a critical income source for women. They are an empowering resource — and an icon for this work.
Half of the proceeds of the GOAT sweepstakes go to the WooSox Foundation as they focus on initiatives in education, social justice and cancer research. The other half goes directly to Project GOAT, which works to increase awareness and prevention of human trafficking.
The GOAT sweepstakes runs through the end of the summer. Tickets can be purchased at Polar Park and online, with a minimum of $10 for 100 entries. To enter the sweepstakes, go to: https://e.givesmart.com/events/mg9/.
